Final sketch is complete for Little Freedom House (well, it has been for a while, but now that the ground is frozen, I can actually blog).... can't believe how much I've changed the design from the first sketch--I think this is #9?
Height, width, and weight restrictions, water storage placement, size requirements, kitchen appliances, light fixtures and placement, adding a fireplace (YES) but losing storage/cupboard/counter space: BOO), adding support walls, factoring in thinner side walls (thanks Kenyon for the lesson on thermal bridging) and having the awesome brainwave of extending the sitting area to become a bay window (hello extra footage, light, and storage!) and extending the storage over the hitch (to sit over the bed of the truck when towing) for rain water storage, sufficient shower space (I hate small showers), a functional kitchen with sufficient cupboard space, loft ladder placement, functional office space, electrical vs propane vs both vs 3-way vs each other and all combinations thereof.... all big factors.
In fact, everything is a big factor when dealing with 128 square feet. I have felt like everything is dependent on everything else, and have been told by engineers that window placement and size is crucial to get right to get the necessary support in such a small structure, determining where the inverter for solar power goes determines a lot of other things, as does placement of battery bank storage, accessibility and maintenance, size of battery bank determines n, and type of x material determines materials y-bb... types of insulation, type of framing, width, material. It's all very complex and integrated... which is as it should be, in a conscious living space.
My custom-designed home was always meant to be on purpose, with purpose, for a purpose, so with every step that frustrates me cuz it's another thing I have to research, measure, figure out, decide on, I appreciate having so much say in my space, and appreciate that this place will be built with full integrity and intentionality. Super awesome!
(Can I start building yet??? ........ how bout now......?)
